There’s something magical about starting a new project at the very beginning of the year. For 2026, I’ve decided to dive into pastels, soft textures, and minimalist designs for my throw blankets. I wanted to give you a peek into my WIP (Work In Progress) diary as I design my first pastel throw of the year.
Choosing the Palette
Pastels are delicate, serene, and perfect for creating a cozy, modern throw. For this project, I’m drawn to:
- Soft blush pinks
- Muted lavender
- Pale mint greens
- Creamy off-whites
I’m layering these colors to create a gentle, harmonious look that fits both modern minimalist spaces and classic cozy corners.
Picking the Stitch Pattern
Texture is everything in a throw, even when the color palette is understated. After testing a few samples, I decided on a raised basketweave-inspired stitch. It adds subtle dimension without overwhelming the soft pastel tones. Plus, it’s fun to knit and keeps my hands busy in just the right way.
The Design Process
Here’s how I approach designing a throw from scratch:
- Sketching: Rough sketches to map out color blocks or stripe placement.
- Swatching: Knit small swatches to see how the colors blend and how the stitch behaves.
- Sizing: Calculating yarn needed for my target size (40×60 inches for this throw).
- Adjusting: Tweaking colors or stitch patterns if something doesn’t feel right.
Already, I’ve knit a few swatches, and it’s amazing how the colors subtly shift when worked up in the chosen stitch.
Early Impressions
So far, this pastel throw is shaping up to be soft, light, and cozy, with just the right hint of texture. I can already imagine it draped over a chair by the window or folded neatly on a bed.
Keeping a WIP diary like this helps me stay organized, inspired, and intentional with each project. Plus, it’s a great way to share the creative journey with you!
Next Steps
I’ll continue knitting the first section, tracking yarn usage, and documenting any adjustments. Soon, I’ll share more progress shots, tips for working with pastels, and reflections on the stitch choice.
If you’re dreaming of soft, textured throws for 2026, I hope this WIP diary inspires you to start your own cozy project!
